Mount Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro routes — which is the best for you?
There are seven established routes to Uhuru Peak. The right one depends on your fitness, your timeline, and how badly you want the summit. Here is Lulu's honest guide.
Our approach
Safety first. Summit second.
Longer acclimatisation
We recommend 7-, 8- and 9-day itineraries. Longer routes mean higher summit rates and safer climbs.
Full safety kit
Pulse oximetry twice daily, portable oxygen and a stretcher on every Lulu expedition.
Certified guides
Wilderness First Responder-trained Tanzanian guides, fair crew ratios and an ethical porter policy.
Quality equipment
Mountain-hardware tents, four-season sleeping bags on request and a full pre-departure kit list.
Which is the best route?
Our winners, by category
Highest summit success
Lemosho (8 days) and the Northern Circuit (9 days) — better acclimatisation and an easier summit night at Stella Point.
Most scenic route
Lemosho — the western approach delivers spectacular vistas in every direction.
Quietest route
Rongai — the only northern approach, well away from the busy southern trails.
Most challenging
Any route with a Crater Camp add-on — fewer than 1% of climbers experience it, and every one of ours calls it unforgettable.

Machame Route
The 'Whiskey' route — high success, five climate zones
- Highly recommended for first-time climbers with strong success rates
- Classic walk-high, sleep-low acclimatisation profile
- Stunning scenery through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and arctic zones
- Ascent and descent via different routes — no backtracking
9 days
from USD 3,795
Northern Circuit
Highest summit success rate on the mountain

- 360° views from every side of Kibo
- Ideal for climbers who want to give themselves every chance of the summit
6–7 days
from USD 3,245
Rongai Route
The quiet northern approach
- The only route approaching from the north — a true wilderness feel early on
- Drier than the southern routes; a strong choice in shoulder seasons
- Fewer climbers than Machame or Marangu
- Tough summit night with limited walk-high, sleep-low opportunities
5–6 days
from USD 3,025
Marangu Route
The 'Coca-Cola' route — hut accommodation throughout
- The only route with dormitory-style hut accommodation — no tents
- Shortest itinerary, which means less time to acclimatise
- Same trail used for ascent and descent
- Lower summit success rate — we recommend adding the 6-day option
7–8 days
from USD 3,465
Shira Route
A high-start alternative to Lemosho
- Vehicle transfer to a high starting point on the Shira Plateau
- Merges with the Lemosho route on day two
- Higher starting altitude means less natural acclimatisation
- We generally recommend Lemosho over Shira for a stronger summit chance
6 days
from USD 3,245
Umbwe Route
Steep, direct and very quiet — for experienced trekkers
- The steepest and most direct route to the summit
- Very low success rate due to rapid ascent and poor acclimatisation
- Remote and virtually deserted on the first two days
- Only recommended for climbers with prior high-altitude experience
How to choose
Six things to weigh before you book
Acclimatisation
The golden rule at altitude is walk high, sleep low. Lemosho and Machame follow this profile naturally and give the best acclimatisation.
Summit night
The toughest summit nights are on Rongai and Marangu — they reach the crater rim opposite Uhuru Peak, adding two extra hours at altitude. Lemosho and Machame reach Stella Point, under an hour from the summit.
How busy the route is
If solitude matters to you, Rongai is the answer. The southern routes are considerably busier, especially in peak season.
Accommodation
Marangu is the only route with huts. Every other route is fully catered private camping with Lulu's mountain crew.
Safety
Every route we operate is safe when walked sensibly with a qualified team. We do not run the Arrow Point route — the rockfall risk is unmanageable.
Summit success rate
The Northern Circuit (9 days) leads, followed by Lemosho over 8 days and Machame over 7 days. Longer itineraries win every time.
Beyond the mountain
Combine with a safari or Zanzibar

Most Lulu climbers pair Kilimanjaro with a 3–5 day Northern Circuit safari or a Zanzibar beach recovery. We handle transfers, internal flights and rest days so you land on the mountain in the best possible shape.
