What to Pack for a Tanzania Safari (and What to Leave)

You need less than you think. A short, honest packing list from a guide who has seen every over-stuffed suitcase in Arusha airport.

Clothing — neutrals only

Khaki, olive, brown, grey. Skip white (dust), bright colours (spooks animals), and dark blue or black (attracts tsetse flies). Three shirts and two trousers is plenty — every camp has laundry.

Layers matter. Serengeti mornings are cold enough for a fleece and a windproof shell. By 11 am you're in a t-shirt. By 6 pm the fleece is back on.

Kit that earns its space

8×42 binoculars (one per person). A wide-brimmed hat. Sunglasses. Reef-safe sunscreen. A refillable water bottle — we have filtered water in every vehicle. A headlamp for camp. Anti-malarial tablets prescribed at home.

What to leave

Hard-shell suitcases (bush flights ban them — soft duffels only). Camouflage clothing (illegal in Tanzania). Drones (permit-only, we don't recommend). Six pairs of shoes (bring two — one trainer, one sandal).
